Join Alderman Scott Waguespack for "You Took Away My Flag: A Musicalabout Kosovo" at Theatre Building Chicago Friday, April 16, 2010 as he supportslocal arts and one of his most influential educators.
The Theatre Building is located in the 32nd Ward and all proceeds from the performances benefit the local arts.
Prof. Henry J. Perritt, author of "You Took Away My Flag"founded Operation Kosovo at Chicago-Kent College of law with help from Alderman Waguespack when he was a student. The Alderman was one of the first CK students to go to Kosovo with Perritt, assisting with refugee relief and then economic, legal and political development.
Waguespack led Operation Kosovo's effort to get the nation’s government to establish a chamber of commerce in the U.S., even as the United Nations mission was being organized.
"Scott has become a close friend. I admire his courage andhis integrity. He demonstrated both when he was a Peace Corps volunteer andagain when he was working on Kosovo," said Perritt, who has served three U.S.Presidents and was a Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress from the IL 10th District in 2002.
"More recently Scott courageously helped lead efforts to clean up the corrupt mess in Berwyn. As an alderman, he is an innovative and independent voice for Chicago and all its peoples."
"You Took Away My Flag" is the story of a family strugglingunder the oppression of war and ethnic conflict, yearning for freedom, theability to rule their own destiny, and attempting to turn romantic ideals intoreality.
Perritt has been an instrumental figure in the redevelopmentof Kosovo and written two books on the nation, "The Kosovo Liberation Army:Inside Story of an Insurgency" and "The Road to Independence for Kosovo: AChronicle of the Ahtisaari Plan."
In researching the KLA book Perritt - a lifelong composer -decided he needed to music and poetry to bring the dramatic and touching stories of the people to life. While the show is set in Kosovo, it applies to conflicts from the American Revolution to Ireland in 1912 to Iraqi Kurdistan today.
The show is dramatic and inspiring with great reviews of themusic and the cast. Performances are at Theatre Building Chicago,1225 W. Belmont Ave., Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:15 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. Box office at 773-327-5252

I spoke at a US PIRG Conference Panel on Privatization with Mick Dumke, Dr. M. Likovsky (NYU) December 2009, addressing the issues of the Chicago Parking Meter lease. The bottom line: Chicago Parking Meter Privatization is exhibit 1 on how not to do privatization.
